Wuxi Duck Bay Mixed-use Development

Wuxi, China

Design 2012 – 2013

The Duck Bay development is located along the central axis of NanChang Historical street, with NanChang Road to the East, canal to the West and its North and South areas closely abutting historical street-side dwellings, a location redolent with the unique flavors of the Jiangnan water town. The plan calls for an organic blending of theater, commercial and open public spaces as well as integrating the traditional elements of Wu Xi’s canal-side lanes, plazas and grey roofing tiles, a coupling of the contemporary and the traditional.

This scheme keeps alley ways on both sides of the development, and brings in new retail functions. Visitors can enjoy the traditional alley while shopping. Open spaces are connected to bring visual and physical hierarchy. The overall choice for building material is based on the traditional Wuxi palette: white wall, gray bricks and glass storefront. This is contextual to surrounding Chinese style buildings and brick western buildings. The buildings are mainly three stories with cinema and retail on the first and second floor. Basement floor has cinema, retail, parking and mechanical functions. Total building area is 15000 square meters.

Duck Bay development site sits between two canals. This unique location will connect retail of surrounding area, and become an interesting canal project, and to become a new member of the historical QingMing Bridge Historical District.
